If you didn’t attend, you missed our terrific State Senator Dave Min speaking on his bill to stop selling guns on property owned by the state. It’s now at the Assembly for consideration. Senator Min is outspoken on his views on gun control. He reminded us that until recently the 2nd amendment was viewed as a law restricted to a “well regulated militia” not personal ownership of weapons. Much to do on this issue. Our former Congressman (soon to be our next Congressman) Harley Rouda spoke up about his efforts while in Congress to work for gun legislation with Republicans. We have to work hard to return Harley to Congress. The Democratic majority in the House is slim. We cannot allow Republicans to have the power to invalidate the 2024 election. Pete Hardin, our candidate for OC District Attorney spoke eloquently on the problems with our current District Attorney. Check out his website for more information and to donate to his campaign. Lastly, Duke Nguyen, our past candidate for OC Sheriff unofficially announced that he’s running again. Look for an official announcement after July 1st.
As you know (and see below) we are short a council member in HB. There are currently 189 applicants. For a list go to https://huntingtonbeachca.gov/files/users/info_systems/Appointee-Applicants.pdf At the meeting several local leaders recommended Oscar Rodriguez who the Huddle supported in 2020. Oscar is a strong community advocate not just for the Hispanic community but for all of Huntington Beach. Look here for his LinkdIn profile.
HB CITY COUNCIL MEMBER REPLACEMENT
After Tito Oritiz’ resignation, the Council elected member Barbara Delgleize as Mayor Pro Tem. The council has determined a process to select a replacement for the Ortiz seat on the council. The new member will be selected via an application process. All the information is posted on the HB City website. HB citizens have applied (deadline was June 18). Interviews will be in late June or July. Final selection will be in July. Click here for a list of applicants. The mission of this humanitarian shelter is quick family reunification. We must treat every single child with compassion, kindness, and love.
If you would like to help, there are several ways you can show your love for these kids:
BOOK DONATIONS
One of the first things you can do is donate a book. Go to http://longbeach.gov/press-releases/long-beach-launches-book-donation-drive-for-arriving-migrant-children/ We need books in English and Spanish.
VOLUNTEER
Organizations and any individual interested in volunteering can also learn more about the temporary shelter and fill out a volunteer interest form.
DONATIONS
For anyone interested in making a monetary donation, the Long Beach Community Foundation has created the Migrant Children Support Fund. Donations made to the fund will be awarded to grants to organizations that will provide educational and play items for the children during their stay in Long Beach, and gift cards to assist the children as they are reunited with their families. Uses of these charitable funds will be updated as the needs arise during the children’s stay in Long Beach.
